In this episode of “5 Minutes,” Dr. Robert Svoboda explores Rahu in Jyotisha and its influence on perception, desire, technology, and the modern world.

I felt inspired to talk about Rahu because, according to some calculations, the United States has entered its Rahu Mahadasha, its major planetary period of Rahu. This is the third Rahu Mahadasha that the United States has experienced, and the qualities of Rahu have certainly been visible, especially since recent years.

Rahu represents quick action, dramatic and sometimes explosive change, original thinking, unusual approaches, and doing things differently from the way they have traditionally been done. Rahu can sometimes produce creativity and beneficial innovation. However, like some other Grahas, Rahu is considered a malefic influence, especially because it does not perceive itself accurately.

Iconographically, Rahu is represented as a head that has been separated from its body. A head without a body is always interested in consuming, but it cannot become satisfied because there is no body to digest what it consumes.

When Rahu influences an individual or a society, there can be a powerful desire for change and a strong urge to obtain something that appears to be missing. However, there may be no clear endpoint to that desire. Unless one takes time to examine reality carefully, accurately, and honestly, it becomes difficult to see clearly and act meaningfully.

This is why people influenced by Rahu may sometimes act in ways that do not produce meaningful results. They become influenced by a shadow. Rahu, along with Ketu, the South Node of the Moon, are called shadow planets because they are not visible physical planets. They are points where eclipses occur, where the Moon’s orbit intersects with the Earth’s orbit around the Sun.

Because they are shadows, they have a shadow-like effect on awareness. They can make perception less accurate and encourage confusion about reality.

In many ways, we have been progressively living in a Rahu-influenced world. Millions of people spend enormous amounts of time on the Internet, becoming disconnected from their bodies and their immediate reality. They can become absorbed in a world created through technology, a world that fulfills certain desires but may remain disconnected from actual physical existence.

When Rahu is influencing you, it is important to remember two things. First, you are probably not seeing things as accurately as you believe you are. However certain you may feel about your perception, there is likely something important that you are not seeing. In fact, the stronger the feeling that you see everything perfectly, the more likely Rahu may be hiding something from you.

Second, remember that Rahu magnifies things. Even when a situation appears to be almost completely beneficial and desirable, the small portion that is problematic can become much larger than it actually is because Rahu tends to enlarge what appears unsatisfactory.

Perhaps the most important advice when dealing with Rahu is to delay action. If Rahu makes you feel that you must do something today, wait until tomorrow. If it feels urgent and must happen within the next hour or two, postpone it for a week. If it feels absolutely immediate, wait even longer if possible.

Rahu creates restlessness and contributes to Vata imbalance, along with Saturn, because it causes the mind to move rapidly among ideas, desires, and impulses. Therefore, keeping Vata under control is essential when working with Rahu. Regular oiling of the body, drinking nourishing soups, sitting quietly in meditation, practicing yoga, and creating stability in daily life can all help.

Rahu is a powerful force, and it can create both difficulties and opportunities. The goal is not to reject Rahu but to establish a healthy relationship with it so that its energy can be directed wisely.

May all the Grahas, and especially Rahu, be benevolent to us.
